pH in Home Water Supply

The pH level of your drinking water reflects how acidic it is. pH is short for "potential of hydrogen" - referring to the amount of hydrogen found in water (or any substance). pH in water is measured on a scale that runs from 0 to 14. Seven is neutral, anything above is alkaline and anything below is acidic.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that public water systems maintain pH levels of between 6.5 and 8.5 - and this is considered a good yardstick for homes with private water wells.

You can have your water supply tested for the pH level.

If your water is below 6.5 then your water is acidic, naturally soft and likely corrosive. Metal water pipes could be damaged with corrosion; sinks, tubs, and laundry can be stained with blue-green tints; and some metals such as copper, lead, and zinc can leach into your water supply. Pin hole leaks in your water pipes can be expensive to repair.

If your water is above 8.5 then there is a high level of alkalinity minerals present. While not a health risk, high alkalinity can make water bitter and cause a buildup of scale in plumbing.
